“One of the world’s most bizarre indoor theme parks”

It is said that everything is bigger and better in the United States, but people sometimes seem to underestimate China. The country has several of the world’s tallest buildings, whilst Chongqing East and the Three Gorges Dam count as the largest railway station and the largest hydroelectric power station on the planet. China also excels in the world of theme parks. It is the country with the most roller coasters; it offers the largest Legoland (including a Minifigure that is approximately 650 times larger than its normal siblings) and it’s been home to the world’s largest indoor theme park since 2024. The gigantic Chimelong Spaceship set course for the southern Chinese city of Zhuhai and landed right next to Chimelong Ocean Kingdom. That park, which is ten years older, had already made a strong impression during yesterday’s visit, so we’re entering Spaceship with certain expectations.

I don’t know how often I’ll be using words like ‘huge’, ‘gigantic’ and ‘colossal’ in this report, but it’s probably more than I can count on the fingers of two hands. After all, the dimensions of Chimelong Spaceship are unbelievable. The building is nearly 2,000 feet (600 metres) long and around 650 feet (200 metres) wide. To put that into perspective: you could fit 90 olympic swimming pools inside the building. The story becomes even more spectacular when you realise that Chimelong didn’t opt for a factory-style hall, as you see in most other indoor theme parks. No, they wanted the exterior to be designed like a futuristic spaceship. When I first saw photos of this park, it looked as if the images were AI generated. However, now that I’ve visited the Chimelong International Ocean Tourist Resort myself, I can say with certainty that the Spaceship does indeed exist. And behind the walls of this spacecraft lies a rather impressive theme park.

CHIMELONG SPACESHIP HOTEL

With its large-scale theatre shows and two full-size theme parks, the Chimelong resort has become a destination where you’ll probably want to spend more than one day. You can, of course, spend the night in one of many hotels in the city centre of Zhuhai, but I’d recommend booking an on-site accommodation. The resort’s four official hotels are literally right next to the parks, and it’s hard to beat their pricing. I’ve already mentioned this in my previous report, but I’m happy to repeat that we paid just 464 USD (406 euros) for a 3-day package for two people. That package included two nights of accommodation including breakfast and three days of unlimited access to Ocean Kingdom and Spaceship. Guests at the Chimelong hotels can also enjoy early entry to (one of) the parks, which offers an opportunity to avoid the longest queues. Bookings can easily be made through websites like Trip.com and Klook.

We chose the Chimelong Spaceship Hotel, a modern tower that’s directly attached to the gigantic spaceship. Its sheer scale is overwhelming. You could park a medium-sized plane in the lobby and with a total of 1,250 rooms, this complex is larger than any hotel at Disneyland Paris. Our room on the 20th floor had rather childish decoration, but there was no reason to complain about the comfort and size. By the way: be sure to ask for a room on the east side of the building, as this will give you a view of the Spaceship and Ocean Kingdom. If that request isn’t granted, you can still enjoy panoramic views from the top floor. This area consists of a viewing point, a chic restaurant and an infinity pool overlooking the entire resort.

ANIMALS

At the park’s entrance, Chimelong Spaceship proudly displays a series of Guinness World Records certificates. First and foremost, it is the world’s largest indoor theme park, a title previously owned by Warner Bros World in the United Arab Emirates. In addition, the park boasts the largest aquarium, the highest artificial waves and the largest living coral reef on land. These records reveal that Chimelong Spaceship, just like the adjacent Ocean Kingdom, is a marine theme park. Although you’ll find a number of classic amusement park ride here, aquariums and other animal exhibits form the beating heart of the complex. Reportedly, no fewer than 150,000 creatures of over 300 different species swim, crawl and fly around the Spaceship.

It may come as a surprise, but only a small part of Chimelong Spaceship is themed around space. Apart from aliens and spaceships, the park mainly consists of exotic habitats. There are white-sided dolphins in Asia Galaxy, a nocturnal rainforest can be found underneath the branches of the Tree of Life (which is noticeably smaller than its namesake at Disney’s Animal Kingdom) and we discover manatees in the African section of the park. However, my favourite animal exhibit is the record-breaking coral reef housed in a tank containing over 2.8 million litres of water. It’s a colourful spectacle featuring dozens of tropical fish species, and Chimelong even provided extra entertainment. The aquarium regularly hosts mermaid shows, and every so often the Coral Monster comes to life. This 30-feet-tall animatronic tells a story about the importance and conservation of coral reefs. It’s weird, but impressive.

It’s kind of tricky to find your way around Chimelong Spaceship. We’ve explored the park in a rather random way, as we found that the whole place felt like a maze. Nevertheless, there appears to be a suggested linear walking route on the ground floor. This route starts by the mangroves and shallow waters, and eventually leads to the deepest regions of the ocean. From the coral reefs, for example, we head towards Shark Adventure, a dimly lit walkway alongside a few shark tanks. Further on is Dragon Sky, an area that reminded us of a natural history museum due to its huge whale sculptures. The accompanying mini-show featuring a dragon animatronic feels like a random addition to this zone, but the colossal creature delivers a visual spectacle nevertheless.

Keeping marine mammals in captivity is considered a controversial thing in much of the Western world… and rightly so. The American SeaWorld parks have discontinued their orca breeding programme, and these majestic creatures can’t be found at the recently opened park on Yas Island. In China, however, they seem to have missed a few memos, as Chimelong Spaceship is home to a large group of killer whales. And although it feels wrong, I won’t deny that it’s an incredible sight to see these giants in real life. You can admire the animals from two different levels. On the ground floor is the Orca Underwater Adventure, where guests get unobstructed views of the orcas in their 56-million-litre tank. On the second floor, we find the ridiculously huge Orca Stadium. The show that’s performed here reminds us of the killer whale presentations you’d see at similar theme parks. Still, the show features a series of quirky side acts. We see pelicans, drone-controlled dolphins and a pair of performers attached to hot air balloons flying overhead. And after the orcas’ final splash, it’s suddenly time for a parade featuring the Chimelong mascots and dozens of performers. China… it is and always will be a special country.

DARK RIDES

Are you wondering why all these animals actually live inside a spaceship? Don’t worry… you’re not alone. Answers to this question are provided by Journey with Kube (an interactive walk-through) and a simulator called Spaceship’s Story. This attraction is located at the park’s main entrance and it serves as a sort of prologue to your actual visit. It’s therefore meant to be ridden right after entering the park, but you’ll find considerably shorter queues a bit later in the day. We found the ride itself to be pretty enjoyable. It’s a Star Tours-style adventure with some influences from Universal’s Transformers dark ride. The attraction’s placement is also rather cool. The simulators aren’t hidden from sight, which creates some good kinetic energy in this space. In the centre of the same hall, we also discovered another spaceship underneath a projected starry sky. Quite impressive!

Do you like audio-animatronics? If so, you’ll definitely enjoy exploring Chimelong Spaceship. The park is packed with animatronics in all shapes and sizes. While the movements of these figures are rather limited, they do give the park a distinct identity. There are displays featuring immense space monsters, we spotted a Mufasa-like lion on top a Chinese Pride Rock, and there’s a musical animatronic show in the African marketplace. A large number of animatronics can also be seen while riding Deep Sea Adventure. This dark ride is set in a cartoonish underwater world that reminded me of the SpongeBob universe. The storyline is unusual, to say the least. Visitors are attending a party in the fish city, but some fish apparently had the wrong drink (drugs?!) and that could disrupt the festivities. However, we provide the antidote they need with our laser pistols. I do see the humour of it, but I want to add that Deep Sea Adventure is everything but a world-class dark ride. The scenery looks simple and the interactive game isn’t really challenging.

Let’s return to that natural history museum with the whale sculptures. That area of the park can be discovered using a slow-moving inverted monorail called Ancient Seas AR Voyage. At first glance, this looked like an ordinary panoramic tour… until we noticed the passengers constantly making big hand gestures. They weren’t doing this out of anger or to wave at their friends, but to score points. Riders wear augmented reality glasses to play an interactive game. When we tried it out ourselves, we weren’t impressed at all. The quality of the projected images turned out to be very poor and the game is weird. I’m not a fan of Universal’s AR attraction, but Ancient Seas AR Voyage turned out to be even weaker.

Chimelong Spaceship’s standout attraction is undoubtedly Bermuda Storm. This is a simulator of impressive scale, as it broke no fewer than two world records. The ride utilizes the world’s largest curved projection screen, and with a capacity of 304 passengers, it’s also the largest motion simulator currently in existence. Captain Bob and his monkey Charlie take us on a pleasant cruise, but unsurprisingly, things start to go wrong as soon as we leave the dock. Suddenly we are surrounded by tornadoes, evil pirates, tsunamis and a hungry sea monster. It’s not original storytelling, yet Bermuda Storm certainly provides surprises. One of those surprises is the appearance of a Charlie animatronic out of nowhere. Besides, water effects at the bottom of the screen create a perfect transition between the virtual and real worlds. A lot is happening, and that’s exactly why Bermuda Storm provides the most spectacular four minutes of our visit to Chimelong Spaceship.

A few steps further lies the entrance to Dive the Abyss – Submarine Journey. If you are familiar with the submarine attractions at the Legoland theme parks, this dark ride holds very few surprises. Guests take their seats in a submarine, which then slowly moves through an aquarium. During the ride, we admire both themed show scenes and real tropical fish in their natural habitat. Submarine Journey is certainly not a sensational attraction, but it fits perfectly into the bigger picture of Chimelong Spaceship. The ride also has a rather high capacity, so the line moves at a brisk pace.

OTHER EXPERIENCES

The majority of the rides can be found on the second floor of the Spaceship. Future City and Ocean Playground are two separate zones full of family attractions. Ocean Playground is the largest area of these two and somewhat reminded me of Lotte World in South Korea. Here, alongside Bermuda Storm and Submarine Voyage, you’ll find a multitude of family-friendly flat rides with cheerful underwater decoration. Visitors can enjoy rides on carousels, freefall towers, a Disk’o, a swinging ship, or one of the three (!) inverted monorails. The theming is colourful and the atmosphere is excellent, so it’s a fantastic place for young families. Future City offers similar rides, and on the north side of the Spaceship there are also a couple of (surprisingly popular) driving schools for children.

WORTH A VISIT?

Did the Chimelong Resort really need a second marine theme park? I’d say no. I had already seen more than enough fish and marine mammals during our day at Ocean Kingdom, so frankly, I don’t quite understand why they decided to add a second underwater world. That being said, Chimelong Spaceship is substantially different from Ocean Kingdom. The spectacular exterior is obviously a highlight, but there’s plenty of beauty on the inside as well. Most aquariums look more modern and sensational than those in the other park, and we also discovered a few fine attractions. Yet, the park has its weaknesses. The level of theming, for example, is inconsistent. Around the corner of a beautiful themed land, you could easily find an ugly corridor with cheap pay-per-ride attractions. And while some walk-throughs are absolutely stunning, the orcas seem to reside in a grey bunker. Finally, there’s a certain thematic clash between the space-themed areas and the exotic habitats. Although I realise that the link between these environment is being explained, it simply doesn’t feel natural.

If Chimelong Spaceship was meant to be the Chinese answer to SeaWorld Yas Island, they succeeded for 75 percent. The unique building and the world records are great ways to show off, but there is still room for improvement in the fine details. Nevertheless, the Spaceship is worth a visit, especially when you combine it with a day at Ocean Kingdom. And if the resort continues to expand at its current pace, it could well become a world-class theme park destination in a matter of years.

“Een van de vreemdste indoor-themaparken op deze aardbol”

Er wordt wel eens gezegd dat in de Verenigde Staten alles bigger and better is, maar in China kan men er tegenwoordig ook wat van. Het land heeft meerdere noteringen in de lijst met ‘s werelds hoogste gebouwen, terwijl Chongqing East en de Drieklovendam respectievelijk het grootste treinstation en de grootste waterkrachtcentrale van de planeet zijn. Ook in de pretparkwereld presteert China uitmuntend. Dit is het land met de meeste achtbanen, je vindt er het grootste Legoland (inclusief een Minifigure dat maar liefst 650 keer groter is dan z’n normale soortgenoten) en sinds 2024 kan je hier tevens terecht in ‘s werelds grootste overdekte themapark. Het reusachtige Chimelong Spaceship zette koers naar de Zuid-Chinese stad Zhuhai en landde daar netjes naast Chimelong Ocean Kingdom. Dat tien jaar oudere park maakte alvast een sterke indruk, dus we betreden Spaceship zeker niet zonder verwachtingen.

Ik weet niet hoe vaak ik in dit report woorden als ‘groot’, ‘gigantisch’ en ‘kolossaal’ ga gebruiken, maar het zal wellicht niet op de vingers van twee handen te tellen zijn. De afmetingen van Chimelong Spaceship grenzen immers aan het ongelooflijke. Het gebouw is ruim 600 meter lang en zowat 200 meter breed. Ter vergelijking: op zo’n oppervlakte kan je ongeveer negen keer de glazen overkapping van Antwerpen-Centraal kwijt. Het verhaal wordt nog spectaculairder wanneer je beseft dat Chimelong niet opteerde voor een soort fabriekshal, zoals je dat bij de meeste andere indoor-themaparken ziet. Neen, men wilde dat de buitenkant vormgegeven werd als een futuristisch ruimteschip. Toen ik voor het eerst foto’s van dit park zag verschijnen, leek het alsof dat beeldmateriaal met artificiële intelligentie gegenereerd was. Nu ik het Chimelong International Ocean Tourist Resort zelf bezocht heb, kan ik echter met zekerheid zeggen dat het Spaceship wel degelijk bestaat. En achter de wanden van dit ruimtetuig ligt een behoorlijk imposant themapark.

CHIMELONG SPACESHIP HOTEL

Met z’n grootschalige theatershows en twee volwaardige themaparken is het Chimelong-resort uitgegroeid tot een bestemming waar je bij voorkeur meer dan één dag doorbrengt. Overnachten kan uiteraard in het stadscentrum van Zhuhai, al zou ik eerder aanraden om een hotel binnen het resort te boeken. De vier officiële hotels liggen letterlijk naast de parken en hun prijs-kwaliteitverhouding valt moeilijk te evenaren. Ik schreef dit in het vorige verslag al, maar ik herhaal het graag: een driedaags arrangement voor twee personen kost ons op doordeweekse dagen amper 406 euro! Dat pakket bestaat uit twee overnachtingen inclusief ontbijt en drie dagen onbeperkte toegang tot Ocean Kingdom en Spaceship. Gasten van de Chimelong-hotels genieten bovendien van vervroegde toegang tot (een van) de parken, wat tijdens drukke periodes handig is om de langste wachtrijen te vermijden.

Onze keuze valt op het Chimelong Spaceship Hotel, een modern torengebouw dat tegen de achterzijde van het gigantische ruimteschip geplakt werd. De omvang is overweldigend: je kan in de lobby een middelgroot vliegtuig parkeren en met een totaal van 1.250 kamers is dit complex groter dan eender welk hotel in Disneyland Paris. Onze kamer op de twintigste verdieping blijkt gedecoreerd met redelijk kinderlijke motiefjes, maar qua comfort en ruimte valt er niks slechts over te zeggen. Vraag trouwens zeker naar een kamer aan de oostzijde van het gebouw, want dan geniet je van een uitzicht op het Spaceship en Ocean Kingdom. Indien dat verzoek niet ingewilligd wordt, kan je gelukkig nog steeds van het panorama genieten op de hoogste etage. Naast een uitkijkpunt vind je daar eveneens een chique restaurant en een infinity pool met onbetaalbare views over het hele resort.

DIEREN

Aan de ingang van het park pronkt Chimelong Spaceship met een hele reeks Guinness World Records-certificaten. Eerst en vooral is dit ‘s werelds grootste overdekte themapark, een titel die overtuigend werd overgenomen van Warner Bros World in de Verenigde Arabische Emiraten. Daarnaast beschikt dit park over het grootste aquarium, de hoogste kunstmatige golven en het grootste levende koraalrif aan land. Laatstgenoemde records verklappen overduidelijk dat Chimelong Spaceship, net zoals het aangrenzende Ocean Kingdom, een maritiem themapark is. Hoewel er hier een aantal klassieke pretparkattracties staan, vormen aquaria en andere biotopen het kloppende hart van het complex. Naar verluidt zwemmen, kruipen en vliegen er in het Spaceship maar liefst 150.000 beestjes van ruim 300 verschillende soorten.

Het komt misschien als een verrassing, maar slechts een klein deel van Chimelong Spaceship is gethematiseerd naar de ruimte. Naast aliens en ruimteschepen bestaat het park immers vooral uit exotische biotopen. In het uitgestrekte Asia Galaxy spotten we witgestreepte dolfijnen, een nachtelijk regenwoud vormt de thuishaven van de Tree of Life (die merkbaar kleiner is dan z’n naamgenoot in Disney’s Animal Kingdom) en in een Afrikaanse zone ontdekken we een prachtig zeekoeienverblijf. De grootste blikvanger is wat mij betreft echter het recordbrekende koraalrif dat zich in een tank met ruim 2,8 miljoen liter water bevindt. Het is een kleurrijk tafereel met tientallen tropische vissoorten en Chimelong zorgde bovendien voor extra entertainment. Het aquarium vormt op regelmatige basis het decor voor zeemeerminshows en om de zoveel tijd komt het Coral Monster tot leven. Deze negen meter hoge animatronic vertelt bezoekers over het belang en het behoud van koraalriffen, en op een gegeven moment komen er zelfs een paar Coral Babies tevoorschijn.

Het is lastig om jezelf te oriënteren in Chimelong Spaceship. Wij ontdekken het park op een behoorlijk ongestructureerde manier en we vinden dat het geheel tamelijk doolhofachtig aanvoelt. Toch is er op de benedenverdieping blijkbaar wel een voorgestelde lineaire wandelroute. Deze start bij mangroves en ondiepe wateren, en leidt uiteindelijk naar de diepste regionen van de oceaan. Vanuit de koraalriffen duiken we bijvoorbeeld richting Shark Adventure, een duistere wandelroute langs een paar haaienbassins. Verderop is er dan weer Dragon Sky, een atypisch gebied dat met z’n hangende walvissculpturen de sfeer van een natuurhistorisch museum oproept. De bijbehorende minishow met een drakenanimatronic lijkt een random aanvulling op deze zone, al zorgt het gevaarte wel voor visueel spektakel.

Het gevangen houden van zeezoogdieren wordt tegenwoordig – terecht – afgekeurd in een groot deel van de westerse wereld. De Amerikaanse SeaWorld-parken hebben hun kweekprogramma met orka’s stopgezet en in het recent geopende park op Yas Island zijn ze zelfs helemaal niet te zien. In China heeft men echter een paar memo’s gemist, want Chimelong Spaceship pakt graag uit met de grote groep killer whales die er leeft. Ik kan dit uiteraard niet toejuichen, maar ontken niet dat het een ongelooflijk zicht is om deze giganten voorbij te zien zwemmen. Je kan de dieren vanaf twee verschillende niveaus bewonderen. Op de begane grond is er de Orca Underwater Adventure, waar bezoekers via een schijnbaar eindeloze raampartij in een tank met 56 miljoen liter water turen. Op de tweede verdieping vinden we dan het belachelijk grote Orca Stadium, waar we twee maal per dag terechtkunnen voor een presentatie zoals je die vanuit gelijkaardige themaparken kent. Of toch bijna… Naast het typische potje synchroonspringen en toeschouwers natmaken, bevat de voorstelling ook een paar minder voor de hand liggende nevenactiviteiten. We zien bijvoorbeeld zowel pelikanen, drone-dolfijnen als een tweetal aan luchtballonnen vastgemaakte performers over onze hoofden vliegen. En na de laatste plons van de orka’s barst er plots een gekke parade met de Chimelong-mascottes en tientallen artiesten los. China… het is en blijft een speciaal land.

DARKRIDES

Vraag je jezelf af wat de link tussen al deze dieren en een ruimteschip is? Wees gerust… je bent niet alleen. Antwoorden op deze vraag worden geboden bij Journey with Kube (een interactieve walk-through) en een simulator met de naam Spaceship’s Story. Deze attractie bevindt zich aan de hoofdentree van Chimelong Spaceship en vormt zo’n beetje de proloog voor je eigenlijke bezoek. Verhaaltechnisch is dit bijgevolg een ride die je meteen bij binnenkomst hoort te doen, maar voor de kortste wachtrijen kom je wellicht beter wat later op de dag. De rit zelf is trouwens erg vermakelijk. We belanden in een Star Tours-achtig avontuur met een paar invloeden van Universals Transformers-darkride. Ook cool: de simulatoren staan hier gewoon vol in het zicht, wat een heel bijzondere dynamiek in deze ruimte creëert. Centraal in diezelfde hal ontdekken we daarenboven nog een ander ruimteschip onder een geprojecteerde sterrenhemel. Best indrukwekkend allemaal.

Hou je van audio-animatronics? Zo ja, dan beleef je wellicht extatische momenten in Chimelong Spaceship. Het park werd namelijk volgepropt met elektronische poppen in alle vormen en maten. Bij de meeste exemplaren zijn de bewegingen eerder beperkt, maar deze tientallen figuurtjes geven het park wel een heel eigen identiteit. Er zijn displays met immense ruimtemonsters, we spotten een Mufasa-achtige leeuw bovenop een Chinese Pride Rock en op het Afrikaanse marktplein speelt er zelfs een muzikale animatronic-dinnershow. Ook bij Deep Sea Adventure zijn er ongelooflijk veel animatronics te spotten. Deze darkride speelt zich af in een cartooneske onderwaterwereld die gebaseerd lijkt op het SpongeBob-universum. De verhaallijn is – zacht uitgedrukt – origineel. We wonen een feestdag in de vissenstad bij, maar sommige vissen hebben blijkbaar een fout drankje (drugs?!) gedronken en dat kan de festiviteiten verstoren. Met onze laserpistolen schieten we echter het tegengif dat ze nodig hebben. Ik zie de humor er wel van in, maar wil er meteen aan toevoegen dat Deep Sea Adventure absoluut geen darkride van wereldniveau is. De poppen zijn simpel en echt uitdagend is het interactieve spelletje niet.

Laat ons even terugkeren naar dat natuurhistorisch museum met de walvissen. In die zone is er namelijk ook Ancient Seas AR Voyage, een traag bewegende inverted monorail. Bij een eerste aanblik vermoed ik dat dit een alledaagse panoramische rondrit is… tot ik de passagiers voortdurend heftige handgebaren zie maken. Dat doen ze niet uit boosheid of om naar bekenden te zwaaien, maar wel om punten te scoren. Passagiers dragen in deze attractie namelijk een augmented reality-brilletje waarop zich een interactief spel afspeelt. Wanneer we het zelf uitproberen, zijn we helaas niet onder de indruk. De kwaliteit van de geprojecteerde beelden blijkt zeer matig en het spelletje is vaag. Ik ben geen fan van Universals AR-attractie, maar deze Ancient Seas AR Voyage presteert dus nog een heel stuk zwakker.

De uitblinker op het gebied van attracties is zonder twijfel Bermuda Storm. Dit is een simulator met een duizelingwekkende omvang, want er werden niet minder dan twee wereldrecords gebroken. De ride maakt namelijk gebruik van ‘s werelds grootste gebogen projectiescherm en met een capaciteit van 304 passagiers is het eveneens de grootste motion simulator die momenteel bestaat. Kapitein Bob en zijn aapje Charlie nemen ons mee op een plezierige rondvaart, maar uiteraard begint alles al snel mis te lopen. We worden omsingeld door tornado’s, er verschijnen kwaadaardige piraten, we worden net niet verzwolgen door een tsunami en uiteraard verschijnt er nog een zeemonster. Originele storytelling is het niet, maar toch zorgt Bermuda Storm wel degelijk voor verrassingen. Watereffecten aan de onderzijde van het scherm zorgen bijvoorbeeld voor een volmaakte overgang tussen de virtuele en reële wereld, en Charlie maakt plots z’n entree in animatronic-vorm. Er gebeurt véél en exact daarom bezorgt Bermuda Storm ons de tofste vier minuten van het hele bezoek aan Chimelong Spaceship.

Een paar stappen verder ligt de ingang van Dive the Abyss – Submarine Journey. Indien je de duikbootattractie van de Legoland-themaparken kent, bevat deze darkride alvast weinig verrassingen. Je neemt met een vijftal medepassagiers plaats in een onderzeeër en beweegt vervolgens traag doorheen een aquarium. Tijdens de rit bewonderen we zowel thematische showscènes als echte tropische vissen in hun natuurlijke habitat. Een sensationele attractie is deze Submarine Journey zeker niet, maar hij past uiteraard wel perfect in het grote plaatje van Chimelong Spaceship. Het ding heeft overigens een prima capaciteit, dus de rij beweegt hier aan een vlot tempo.

ANDERE ATTRACTIES

Het gros van de mechanische attracties is te vinden op de tweede verdieping van het Spaceship. Daar liggen Future City en Ocean Playground, twee afzonderlijke zones vol familiaal vermaak. Ocean Playground blijkt veruit de leukste plek van dit duo. Je vindt hier naast Bermuda Storm en Submarine Voyage immers een tiental flatrides in een vrolijk onderwaterthema. Bezoekers kunnen er terecht voor ritten op draaimolentjes, vrijevaltorens, een Disk’o, een schommelschip of een van de drie (!) inverted monorails die het park rijk is. De theming is kleurrijk en er hangt een uitstekende sfeer, dus ik kan me voorstellen dat dit voor jonge gezinnetjes een heel fijn themagebied is. Future City biedt meer van hetzelfde en aan de noordkant van het Spaceship liggen er ook een tweetal (verbazend populaire) driving schools voor kinderen.

EEN BEZOEK WAARD?

Of het Chimelong Resort echt nood had aan een tweede maritiem themapark? Naar mijn gevoel niet. Tijdens ons dagje Ocean Kingdom had ik al ruim voldoende vissen en zeezoogdieren gezien, dus ik begrijp eerlijk gezegd niet goed waarom de onderwaterwereld ook in deze second gate de hoofdrol speelt. Dat gezegd hebbende, is Chimelong Spaceship wel substantieel ‘anders’ dan Ocean Kingdom. Het spectaculaire exterieur levert sowieso een eerste pluspunt, maar ook aan de binnenkant valt er veel moois te ontdekken. De meeste aquaria ogen moderner en sensationeler dan die in het andere park, en tussen alle dierenverblijven ontdekken we ook een paar prima attracties. Toch moet ik tegelijkertijd toegeven dat er missers zijn. Het themaniveau is bijvoorbeeld niet consistent. Achter de hoek van een prachtig themagebied kan hier immers zomaar een lelijke gang met betalende speeltoestellen liggen. En sommige walk-throughs zijn de schoonheid zelve, terwijl je de orka’s vanuit een grijze bunker moet bekijken. Tot slot blijft er een bepaalde mismatch tussen het ruimtethema en de exotische leefwerelden bestaan. Hoewel ik besef dat de link tussen beiden wordt uitgelegd, voelt het gewoonweg niet natuurlijk aan.

Indien Chimelong Spaceship het Chinese antwoord op SeaWorld Yas Island moest zijn, is de opdracht in mijn ogen voor 75 procent geslaagd. Het unieke gebouw en de wereldrecords zijn top om mee uit te pakken, maar in de fijne details is er nog ruimte voor verbetering. Desalniettemin is het Spaceship een bezoek waard, vooral wanneer je het combineert met een dagje Ocean Kingdom. En als het resort aan het huidige tempo blijft uitbreiden, staat hier over tien jaar wellicht een themaparkbestemming van wereldniveau.
