“The glow-up of a dated regional amusement park”

Every coaster enthusiast in the world knows Holiday Park, the former name of Plopsaland Deutschland. Despite the fact that this German amusement park isn’t huge, it has one unique selling point: Expedition GeForce. This Mega Coaster opened in 2001 and it put Holiday Park on the map. Nowadays, the park is owned and operated by the Belgian Plopsa Group. Plopsa is mainly known for their child-friendly theme parks, so they added loads of family rides to the park. This may seem uninteresting from a coaster fan’s point of view, but Plopsaland Deutschland actually made a huge leap forwards during the past few years. The overall theming level has risen steadily and multiple new attractions are under development for the near future, including a Mack Rides Xtreme Spinning Coaster.

ROLLER COASTERS

Plopsaland Deutschland’s attraction lineup is still dominated by the previously-mentioned Mega Coaster. Before bigFM Expedition GeForce, this was a regional family park. However, it suddenly became a bucket-list destination for coaster enthusiasts from all over the world in 2001. Interestingly, Expedition GeForce’s raw statistics aren’t that unusual by Mega Coaster standards. The lift hill is 174 feet (55 metres) tall and riders reach a top speed of 75 mph (120 km/h). However, the ride’s biggest strengths are its original layout, twisted first drop and brutal positive G-forces. Besides, the back seats deliver some of the craziest airtime I’ve ever experienced on a coaster. Even after its 25th anniversary, Expedition GeForce still offers everything you’d expect from a top-class roller coaster.

As a childless adult, I’m not interested in visiting the Plopsa Indoor parks in Belgium or the Netherlands. I’m able to get a taste of those places’ atmosphere while visiting Plopsaland Deutschland’s indoor section called Plopsa Indoor, though. The hall was themed around animated series such as Heidi, Mia & Me and Tabaluga. The latter immediately caught our attention, as the cute little dragon lends its name to Tabaluga’s Achterbahn, a Force Two model by Zierer. Despite its short layout, this coaster makes an excellent impression. The ride is nice and smooth, and we can see beautiful rock formations all around the track. Great roller coaster for the whole family.

With Majaland and Wickieland, Plopsaland Deutschland has two extensive, cohesively-themed areas. Other parts of the park look a lot more eclectic, though. The western half of the park, in particular, turns out to be a mishmash of different themes. The area contains attractions themed to the beach, wolves, aviation and… pure horror. Sky Scream is a launched coaster that seems to be set in a permanent Halloween setting. The station was designed to look like an abandoned warehouse, whilst the queue functions a spooky walk-through with jump scares. It’s an unusual sight, especially in a Plopsa park. The coaster itself, however, is anything but unusual. Have you ever been to Busch Gardens or SeaWorld San Diego? Then you probably know what a Premier Rides Sky Rocket II is all about. Sky Scream treats its riders to three intense accelerations and one of the highest inversions you’ll find in Europe. That sounds fantastic, but incredibly cramped seats and a short ride duration prevent Sky Scream from being a truly top-class coaster.

Until recently, there’s been quite a large void between the kiddie coaster and the big thrills of GeForce and Sky Scream. That fortunately changed in 2026 with the opening of 100% Wolf, a family coaster that was built at the edge of the park’s lake. Despite its 100% original layout, this Gerstlauer-manufactured coaster immediately reminded me of my rides on Wakala at Bellewaerde Park. 100% Wolf boasts a similar twisty layout, and the ride’s special element is also identical. A track switch and a spike were integrated near the end of the layout, causing riders to experience a short section both forwards and backwards. That trick may not be particularly innovative by today’s standards, but it does give 100% Wolf a 100% unique identity. I’d also like to praise Plopsa’s creative team for the forced perspective and theming surrounding the station.

DARK RIDES

If you’ve visited Holiday Park before 2022, you may remember Burg Falkenstein. This dark ride depicted daily life in a medieval castle, including the cruelties that were part of it. It was precisely that raw edge that made Burg Falkenstein a cult classic, but it didn’t fit well in Plopsa’s family-friendly philosophy. It was therefore to be expected that the attraction would eventually be adapted. And indeed… these days, you’ll find Die Schlümpfe Abenteuer behind the castle walls. The hardware and exterior have remained virtually unchanged, but the attraction tells a considerably friendlier story revolving around the Smurfs nowadays. I genuinely like the result, by the way. The storyline is easy to follow and the ride consists of colourful, atmospheric scenes. Although I might have liked to see a bit more movement in the animatronics, this dark ride is surprisingly fun.

WATER RIDES

It’s great that Plopsa often chooses for original attractions these days. After all, Schlümpfe Abenteuer and 100% Wolf are rides you can’t experience anywhere else. However, Plopsa isn’t afraid to push the copy-and-paste buttons from time to time. Wickieland, for example, looks very similar to its namesake in Plopsaland Belgium. The Splash Battle seems identical and the area’s centrepiece is also a Disk’o Coaster. Nevertheless, I’ve noticed two striking differences. Firstly, the German Wickieland got a considerably nicer location right in the centre of the park. Secondly, the area is noticeably larger thanks to the presence of Wickie Splash, a log flume by Mack Rides dating from 1992. It is kind of similar to Flash Back and Crazy River at Walibi Belgium and Walibi Holland: the ride features three drops, including one backward one. Plopsa has successfully refreshed the decoration, so Wickie Splash remains an excellent family attraction, even after 35 years of operation.

Wickieland isn’t the only place to cool off. Plopsaland Deutschland offers dancing fountains (which seem to be an almost obligatory feature in every park run by this group), a water playground in Majaland and a colourful water slide tower themed to Super Wings. And as if that weren’t enough, you can also head to the centre of the park for Dino Splash. Do not confuse this attraction with its namesake at Plopsaland Belgium. Here in Haßloch, it’s a rapid river rather than a log flume. A rapid river that does not disappoint, by the way. The raging river winds beautifully through the green landscape and there are a number of rapids that are sure to get you wet. However, it’s a shame that most of the dinosaur animatronics along the route no longer move, despite the fact that they’ve only been there since 2020.

OTHER EXPERIENCES

Plopsa once started as a child-oriented theme park chain, so it shouldn’t come as a surprise that many of Plopsaland Deutschland’s attractions are aimed towards younger visitors. A large portion of these rides can be found in Majaland. As I walk through Majaland, I experience a lingering sense of déjà vu. The architectural style, the water playground and the look of the attractions… everything reminds me of Plopsaland Belgium. Even Maja’s Blütensplash is an exact copy of De Bloemenmolen in the Belgian park. The catchy song has obviously been translated into German, but the goal is the same: follow the instructions to avoid getting wet. Even more kiddie rides can de found beneath the tracks of Expedition GeForce. This area is themed around Blinky Bill. Zamperla and Metallbau Emmeln supplied three attractions, whilst Plopsaland provided (simple) decoration with references to the Australian Outback.

Plopsa has a wide range of spinning flat rides. Plopsa Indoor features a carousel with swinging seats, the beach area is home to a jet-ski attraction, and Die Große Welle (The Big Wave) at Wickieland counts as one of the coolest-looking Disk’o Coasters in the world. And then there’s a square known as Air Show ’71, named after Holiday Park’s opening year. The attractions in this area are themed to hot air balloons, antique planes and fighter jets. The biggest crowd pleaser is Sky Fly, which has been built by Gerstlauer. This type of ride can be found at many other European parks and it’s also present at Universal Epic Universe. Plopsaland Deutschland’s version stands out due to its long ride cycle, which makes it relatively easy to make inversions.

The skyline of Plopsaland Deutschland is dominated by Expedition GeForce, Sky Scream and two tall towers. One of them is Lighthouse Tower, a 230-feet-high (70 metres) Star Flyer with a surprisingly long ride programme. Free Fall Tower offers a considerably shorter experience, but it’s very thrilling nevertheless. Unfortunately, this Intamin Giant Drop is one of the park’s weakest attractions when it comes to theming. The queue was decorated with a few photos from the TV series Das Haus Anubis, but that’s it. Let’s hope that this ride will receive a well-deserved renovation soon. A little tip: try to get the gondola closest to the operator’s booth, as it treats you to brilliant views of Expedition GeForce.

WORTH A VISIT?

I remember Holiday Park as a dated family park that just happened to have a superb roller coaster. In fact, Expedition GeForce was the only valid reason to make a quick stop while travelling to Europa-Park or Tripsdrill. However, Plopsa has done an amazing job over the past 15 years. Nowadays, Plopsaland Deutschland is a destination with an extensive ride lineup, excellent theming and a very pleasant atmosphere. Nevertheless, there is still room for improvement, particularly when it comes to operations and staffing. It’s a shame that GeForce seems to be running only one train almost year-round, but this is far from the only attraction that suffers from poor operations. Although it didn’t bother me on a quiet day, I can imagine that a visit to Plopsaland Deutschland may turn out rather disappointing during busier times.

Plopsaland Deutschland isn’t Europe’s best theme park, but we did have a lovely day here. Expedition GeForce remains awesome, 100% Wolf is a great addition and the beach bar served some delicious cocktails. But what are your thoughts? Is Expedition GeForce the world’s best roller coaster? “Thuishaven van een van Europa’s beste rollercoasters”

“We gaan naar Plopsa” had bij de start van het nieuwe millennium slechts één betekenis. Na zo’n uitspraak sprong je in de trein, de tram of de auto, om vervolgens richting De Panne te reizen. Vandaag de dag is de situatie echter complexer. In minder dan drie decennia groeide Plopsa immers uit tot een entertainmentbedrijf met een tiental attractieparken en een handvol waterparken. De term Plopsa duidt tegenwoordig dus niet meer exclusief op het park aan de Belgische kust, maar kan ook verwijzen naar een charmant familiepark in de Ardennen, overdekte kinderpretparken in België en Nederland, sterk gethematiseerde zwembaden of… een themapark bij onze oosterburen. Middenin de groene Pfalz, op ongeveer vierenhalf uur rijden van Antwerpen, ligt namelijk Plopsaland Deutschland.

Officieel bestaat Plopsaland Deutschland nog maar sinds juni 2025, maar het verhaal begon veel eerder dan dat. Oplettende kijkers vinden verwijzingen naar de vroegere situatie in het adres van het park (Holiday-Park-Straße 1-5 in Haßloch) en ook op wegwijzers langs de Autobahn lezen we nog steeds de oude naam. Geheel verrassend is dat niet, want ruim vijftig jaar lang was Holiday Park een gevestigde waarde in het Duitse pretparklandschap. Toch moeten we toegeven dat het park, op één spectaculaire uitbreiding in 2001 na, een beetje stil leek te staan onder leiding van de vorige eigenaars. Studio 100 zag z’n kans en kocht het domein in 2010 aan. Men begon meteen aan de opknapwerken en er werden op regelmatige basis nieuwe attracties geïntroduceerd. Het vertrouwde Holiday Park-merk bleef echter nog een hele poos onaangeroerd. Pas vijftien jaar later leek het management er eindelijk van overtuigd dat het aanbod aan de standaarden van een Plopsa-park voldeed.

ACHTBANEN

Dat aanbod bestaat uit talrijke kindermolentjes, grootschalige familieattracties en een gevarieerde achtbaanselectie, maar wordt toch nog steeds gedomineerd door die ene mega-attractie uit 2001. Vóór bigFM Expedition GeForce was dit een regionaal familiepark, na de komst van deze Intamin Mega Coaster werd het plots een bucket list-bestemming voor achtbaanfans van over de hele wereld. Expedition GeForce dankt z’n status overigens niet zozeer aan het harde cijfermateriaal. Met een hoogte van 55 meter en topsnelheid van 120 kilometer per uur is deze baan, althans naar de normen van een Mega Coaster, immers niet zo buitengewoon. De baan scoort daarentegen wel met z’n originele lay-out, gedraaide first drop, de brute positieve g-krachten en zeer heftige airtime. Wanneer we backseat zitten en met een rotvaart die eerste afdaling in gesleurd worden, besef ik helemaal waarom ik deze hobby zo fantastisch vind. Hoewel GeForce z’n vijfentwintigste verjaardag inmiddels achter de rug heeft, biedt hij nog steeds alles wat je van een steengoede achtbaan mag verwachten.

Als dertiger zonder kinderen heb ik er geen behoefte aan om Plopsa Indoor in Hasselt of Coevorden te bezoeken. Gelukkig kan ik de sfeer van deze overdekte themaparken wel een beetje inschatten na wandelingetjes door Mayaland (in De Panne) en Plopsa Indoor, dat aan het centrale plein van Plopsaland Deutschland grenst. De hal werd aantrekkelijk gethematiseerd naar animatiereeksen als Heidi, Mia & Me en Tabaluga. Laatstgenoemde weet het snelst onze aandacht te trekken, want het schattige draakje leent z’n naam aan Tabaluga’s Achterbahn, een Force Two-model van Zierer. Ondanks de korte lay-out maakt deze coaster een uitstekende indruk. De rit is lekker soepel en we zien prachtige rotsformaties rondom de track. Prima achtbaan voor de hele familie.

Met Majaland en Wickieland heeft Plopsaland Deutschland twee uitgestrekte, coherente themagebieden. In andere zones van het park zie je echter een meer gefragmenteerd geheel. Vooral de westelijke helft van het park blijkt een wirwar van thema’s. Het vreemdste eendje in de bijt is wellicht Sky Scream, een gelanceerde achtbaan die in een soort permanent Halloween-decor lijkt te staan. Het stationsgebouw werd ontworpen als een vervallen fabrieksloods, terwijl de wachtruimte een griezelige walk-through met schrikeffecten blijkt te zijn. Het is, zeker naar de normen van Plopsa, een atypisch tafereel. De rollercoaster zelf is dan weer allesbehalve atypisch, want er werd gekozen voor een standaardmodel uit de catalogus van Premier Rides. Ging je ooit naar Busch Gardens of SeaWorld San Diego? Dan weet je wat deze Sky Rocket II in z’n mars heeft. Sky Scream trakteert ons op drie intense acceleraties en een van de hoogste inversies die je in Europa terugvindt. Dat klinkt fantastisch, maar ontzettend krappe zitjes en een korte ritduur weerhouden Sky Scream ervan om een echte topachtbaan te zijn.

Thrill seekers kunnen terecht bij Sky Scream en Expedition GeForce, terwijl jonge gezinnetjes hun achtbaanplezier door Tabaluga aangereikt krijgen. Daartussenin was er lange tijd een gapende leegte, maar dat probleem werd in 2026 eindelijk opgelost. Aan de rand van het grote meer bouwde men namelijk 100% Wolf, een familieachtbaan van Gerstlauer. Hoewel het ding een 100% originele lay-out kreeg, geeft de baan me een instant déjà-vu naar m’n rondjes op Wakala in Bellewaerde Park. Plopsa’s wolvenbaan pakt uit met een gelijkaardig aanvoelend, bochtig baanverloop en ook het speciale element is identiek. Aan het einde van de lay-out integreerde men namelijk een wissel en een spike, die er tezamen voor zorgen dat je een kort stukje track zowel voor- als achterwaarts beleeft. Hoewel dat trucje naar de huidige maatstaven niet eens zo vernieuwend is, geeft het 100% Wolf wel een 100% eigen identiteit. Ik wil trouwens ook m’n complimenten overmaken aan het creatieve team van Plopsa. Het forced perspective rondom het stationsgebouw en de in rotsen uitgehouwen wolvenkop zijn immers 100% geslaagd.

DARKRIDES

Als je Holiday Park voor 2022 bezocht, herinner je je misschien Burg Falkenstein. Deze darkride toonde het dagelijkse leven in een middeleeuws kasteel, inclusief de wreedheden die daarbij hoorden. Omwille van dat rauwe kantje groeide Burg Falkenstein uit tot een cultklassieker, maar wel een die niet met het familiale karakter van Plopsa te rijmen viel. Het was dus te verwachten dat de attractie op termijn aangepast zou worden. En inderdaad… tegenwoordig vind je achter de kasteelmuren Die Schlümpfe Abenteuer, een attractie rond De Smurfen. De hardware en het exterieur bleven nagenoeg onveranderd, maar de scènes kregen uiteraard een veel vriendelijker karakter. En het mag gezegd: de uitwerking daarvan is tof. De verhaallijn is makkelijk te volgen en de rondrit brengt ons langs kleurrijke, sfeervolle tafereeltjes. Hoewel ik misschien graag nog een beetje meer beweging in de animatronics had gezien, bevalt deze darkride dus prima.

WATERATTRACTIES

Ik vind het tof dat Plopsa z’n parken tegenwoordig vaak uitbouwt met originele attracties. Die Schlümpfe Abenteuer en 100% Wolf zijn immers rides die je nergens anders kan beleven. Plopsa doet echter ook soms gewoon aan kopieer-en-plakwerk. Het in 2021 geopende Wickieland biedt op het eerste gezicht bijvoorbeeld amper verrassingen voor zij die het gelijknamige themagebied in De Panne reeds zagen. We herkennen de cartooneske bouwstijl, de Splash Battle lijkt identiek en ook hier is de blikvanger een Disk’o Coaster. Toch merk ik twee opvallende verschillen op. Ten eerste werd het Duitse Wickieland veel fijner geïntegreerd. In De Panne lijkt de zone ietwat geforceerd aan het park geplakt, maar dit Duitse Wickieland kreeg een toplocatie middenin het park. Ten tweede is het geheel merkbaar uitgestrekter dankzij de aanwezigheid van Wickie Splash, een log flume van Mack Rides uit het jaar 1992. Het is de voorloper van onze eigen Flash Back in Walibi Belgium, al heeft Wickie Splash in mijn ogen een logischere ritopbouw dan z’n Belgische opvolger. Plopsa heeft het decor bovendien succesvol opgefrist, dus zelfs na vijfendertig operationele jaren blijft Wickie Splash een familiale topattractie.

Er wordt niet alleen verkoeling geboden in Wickieland. Nabij de ingang van Plopsaland Deutschland zijn er bijvoorbeeld de dansende fonteinen, die haast verplichte kost lijken in ieder park van deze groep. Verder is er een waterspeelplaats in Majaland en een kleurrijke constructie met waterglijbanen in het thema van animatiereeks Super Wings. En alsof dat nog niet genoeg is, kan je centraal in het park ook terecht voor Dino Splash. Verwar deze attractie vooral niet met z’n naamgenoot in Plopsaland Belgium. Hier in Haßloch onderneem je de dino-expeditie niet per boomstam, maar wel met een rapid river-bootje. En het mag gezegd: deze attractie stelt niet teleur. De rivier kronkelt prachtig door het groene landschap en tijdens de rit zijn er een aantal stroomversnellingen die voor de nodige natheid kunnen zorgen. Toch is het jammer dat we bij de meeste dinosauriër-animatronics langs het parcours geen beweging meer zien, ondanks het feit dat ze er nog maar sinds 2020 staan. Daar mag Plopsa dus zeker eens een technicus op af sturen.

ANDERE ATTRACTIES

Hoewel kinderen al lang niet meer de enige doelgroep van de Plopsa-parken vormen, worden ze uiteraard niet vergeten. Hier in Plopsaland Deutschland kunnen ze zich uitleven met meerdere molentjes, shows en speeltuinen. Het zwaartepunt van het kindervermaak ligt duidelijk in Majaland, een grote outdoor-zone nabij de ingang van het park. Wanneer ik door Majaland wandel, ervaar ik een langgerekte déjà-vu. De bouwstijl, de hekjes, de waterspeelplaats en het attractieaanbod… alles herinnert me aan ons eigen Plopsaland. Zelfs Majas Blütensplash is een exacte kopie van de Bloemenmolen in het Belgische park. Het catchy liedje werd uiteraard vertaald naar het Duits en ook hier moet je de gezongen instructies volgen om niet nat te worden. Onder de tracks van Expedition GeForce zijn er trouwens nog meer kinderattracties te vinden, ditmaal in het thema van Blinky Bill. Zamperla en Metallbau Emmeln leverden drie attracties en Plopsaland zorgde voor (simpele) aankleding met verwijzingen naar de Australische Outback.

Als het tempo iets hoger mag liggen, kan je terugvallen op Plopsa’s ruime aanbod aan draaiende flatrides. Achter de gevel van Plopsa Indoor schuilt er een tof gethematiseerde molen met schommelende zitjes, in het strandgebied staat er zo’n typische jetski-attractie en de blikvanger van Wickieland is Die Große Welle, een Disk’o Coaster. En dan is er nog een pleintje met de naam Air Show ’71, vernoemd naar het openingsjaar van Holiday Park. Je hoeft geen taalwonder te zijn om te snappen dat de luchtvaart hier centraal staat. Dat vertaalt zich naar de brave Red Baron, een antieke molen met luchtballonnen en een origineel gedecoreerde Wellenflug. De publieksfavoriet in het gebied is echter Sky Fly, een vliegtuigmolen van Gerstlauer. Dit attractietype is in Europa goed vertegenwoordigd (andere exemplaren zijn onder meer in Tripsdrill, Nigloland en Duinrell te vinden), maar een ramp vind ik dat niet. Deze doe-het-zelf-ride is immers fantastisch. Ik ben geen waaghals die dertig achtereenvolgende inversies wil draaien, maar stiekem maak ik er wel een sport van om meer omwentelingen te maken dan mijn medepassagiers. En aangezien driekwart van de inzittenden doorgaans niet begrijpt waar deze attractie om draait (pun intended), is dat niet eens zo lastig.

De skyline van Plopsaland Deutschland wordt gedomineerd door Expedition GeForce, Sky Scream en twee torenattracties. Eén van die torens is Lighthouse Tower, een 70 meter hoge Star Flyer met een opvallend lang ritprogramma. We bereiken tot drie maal toe het hoogste punt en hij draait best hard. Misselijkmakend zou ik Lighthouse Tower niet noemen, maar eerlijk… veel langer had die rit voor mij niet moeten duren. Bij Free Fall Tower is de rit beduidend meer to the point. Toch is ook deze Intamin vrijevaltoren verre van volmaakt. Qua thematiek is dit immers een van de zwakste attracties in het huidige assortiment van Plopsaland Deutschland. Er werden een paar kadertjes van tv-serie Das Haus Anubis opgehangen en that’s it. Verder levert Free Fall Tower natuurlijk een prima (voorspelbare) kick, maar een nieuw themakleedje zou de attractie geen kwaad doen. Kleine tip: probeer de gondel aan het operatorhokje te bemachtigen, want die verwent je met een briljant uitzicht op Expedition GeForce.

EEN BEZOEK WAARD?

Ik herinner me Holiday Park als een gedateerd familiepark waarin toevallig een ijzersterke achtbaan te vinden was. De tijd leek er stil te staan en Expedition GeForce was letterlijk de enige geldige reden om hierheen te komen. Plopsa heeft tijdens de voorbije vijftien jaar echter wonderen verricht. Vandaag ontdekte ik namelijk een volwassen pretpark met een verscheiden attractieaanbod, prima thematisering en een heel aangename sfeer. Toch is er nog steeds ruimte voor verbetering, vooral wanneer we over operations en personeelsbezetting praten. Het feit dat GeForce tegenwoordig slechts één trein ter beschikking heeft is bijvoorbeeld een pijnpunt, maar ook bij sommige andere attracties zou het werktempo gerust wat omhoog mogen. Hoewel het me op deze kalme dag niet stoorde, kan ik me voorstellen dat Plopsaland Deutschland tijdens drukkere periodes geen al te beste beurt maakt.

Plopsaland Deutschland is niet Europa’s beste themapark, maar we beleefden hier wel een heerlijke dag. Expedition GeForce blijft fantastisch, 100% Wolf bracht een mooie aanvulling op het familiale aanbod en de cocktails in het strandgebied smaakten uitstekend onder een stralende zomerzon. Maar hoe denk jij erover? Kan dit park tippen aan Plopsaland Belgium? Mag die Smurfendarkride de langverwachte vervanger van het Bos Van Plop worden? En kijk jij ook uit naar de Xtreme Spinning Coaster die hier in 2028 moet openen? Deel je mening via het onderstaande invulveld.
