“The rebirth of Disney’s least interesting theme park”

It’s not uncommon for a Disney theme park to undergo a name change. Disney-MGM Studios became Disney’s Hollywood Studios, Euro Disneyland is now known as Disneyland Paris, and Disney’s California Adventure was transformed into Disney California Adventure (yes, there is a difference). These were all subtle changes that had a relatively limited impact on the identity of their respective parks. However, a more radical transformation has recently taken place at the French Disney resort. Since March 2026, the Walt Disney Studios Park has been known as Disney Adventure World. In this case, we’re not talking about a minor change. It is a statement, a radical break with the past. After all, the current park does everything in its power to not be associated with the Walt Disney Studios that opened here in 2002 and had to endure criticism and complaints year after year.

It’s no secret that Disney didn’t produce particularly successful films around the turn of the millennium. Yet there were lots of things happening within the company at that time. Disney Cruise Line had just put its first two ships into service, and the four existing Disney resorts all received new parks. However, there were big differences when comparing the quality of these parks. In Florida and Japan, Disney’s Animal Kingdom and Tokyo DisneySea were praised for their beauty and uniqueness. The contrast with the expansions in California and France couldn’t have been greater. Disney California Adventure was filled with cheap facades and simple attractions. However, it was still better than the situation in Paris, where the world’s ugliest and most boring Disney park had nestled itself right next to one of the most dazzling destinations. Fortunately, Disney also seemed to realise that Walt Disney Studios was a joke. The park regularly received new attractions and theming enhancements, and in 2018 Disney announced a masterplan to finally bring the park up to the company’s high standards.

The park’s entrance hasn’t changed dramatically. There is, of course, a new name on the gate and on the Earfell Tower, but apart from that, this area still looks largely the same as it did ten years ago. I don’t consider that as a problem, as the entrance has always exuded a certain grandeur. It’s not a place where I usually spend a lot of time, but those palm trees and those film soundtracks create an excellent first impression. The first novelty can be found a few steps further. World Premiere is the stylish successor to Studio 1, a covered Main Street. The facades have been given a fresh look and colourful neon lighting has been added, whilst the accompanying fast food restaurant has also undergone a successful upgrade. It’s not as stunning as Main Street USA at the adjacent Disneyland Park, but it looks decent to say the least.

ROLLER COASTERS

Despite its limited size, Walt Disney Studios is home to 3 credits. The most popular one is undoubtedly Crush’s Coaster. I’ve rarely seen a queue of less than 40 minutes for this coaster. Crush’s Coaster is definitely the resort’s most notorious attraction when it comes to lengthy waits. This doesn’t come as a surprise, though. If Disney presents a family roller coaster with a hyper-popular Finding Nemo theme without considering capacity, then this is the logical outcome. Are those endless lines a valid excuse to ignore Crush’s Coaster? Unfortunately not: the ride is too much fun to skip. It’s surprisingly intense, blissfully smooth and the dark ride part makes me forget that I’m actually riding a roller coaster that was designed to travel on funfairs.

European fans often complain about downtime and the lack of new attractions at Disneyland Park. Fortunately, Disney Adventure World is better off in terms of expansions. A lot of novelties have opened since 2002, while the park was gradually getting rid of the original studio and Hollywood-related theme. One of the bigger expansions came in 2010, when Toy Story Playland was presented. Toy Story Playland consists of three classic flat rides, all of which were presented in a rather simple form. One of those flat rides should definitely be ridden by coaster enthusiasts, though. RC Racer officially counts as a credit. Don’t expect too much: this isn’t much more than a swinging ship and the ride duration is way too short.

And then there’s Avengers Assemble – Flight Force at Avengers Campus. The ride opened in 2022, but it wasn’t entirely new. Avengers Campus was built on the location of the former Back Lot and Flight Force reused the hardware of Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster, which closed in 2019. The layout of this coaster remained identical, but the theming was changed dramatically. The ride now features a modern-looking facade and a cool pre-show, including a state-of-the-art animatronic. However, the current ride experience feels underwhelming. The French version of Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster was known for its incredible lighting effect, but these have all been removed. Flight Force’s screens and projections look rather cheap and simple, making the attraction feel like a watered-down version of Hyperspace Mountain.

DARK RIDES

Avengers Campus was the resort’s main novelty for the 30th anniversary celebrations. The area is home to multiple superheroes, but the most popular of them all is Spider-Man. He even lends his name to Spider-Man W.E.B. Adventure, an interactive dark ride that’s surprisingly similar to Toy Story Mania. This attraction also features spinning vehicles and screen-based scenes. Interestingly, the ride doesn’t make use of laser guns, but it tracks hand gestures. This isn’t entirely unique, as the system was already introduced by Legoland’s Ninjago attractions. French park guests seem to adore W.E.B. Adventure, but I’m actually not a huge fan. The ride could use some extra physical sets and the game play feels rather chaotic.

The former Walt Disney Studios Park was the ugliest Disney park on the planet. But in 2014, the park finally presented an area that exuded real Disney magic. E-Ticket attraction Ratatouille – L’Aventure Totalement Toquée de Rémy opened together with a dazzling interpretation of a Parisian square. The facades are cute, the music is fun and we also got a cool new table service restaurant (with pricey, but tasty steaks). In short: this is Disney as Disney should be. Unfortunately, my opinion about the main attraction is a little less enthusiastic. Don’t get me wrong… Ratatouille is the dark ride that Walt Disney Studios desperately needed. I’m therefore an avid user of the attraction’s single rider line, but I wouldn’t wait longer than 10 minutes for Ratatouille. Honestly, this 4D dark ride simply couldn’t meet my expectations. The effects are so-so and due to its huge video screens, Ratatouille actually feels like it belongs at Universal Studios. Besides, I really miss a climax in the ride experience (something like the rolling boulder in Indiana Jones Adventure). Once again… I’m not saying that Ratatouille is a bad ride, but it’s not a spectacular one either.

Walt Disney Studios was officially renamed to Disney Adventure World on 29 March 2026. The occasion was marked by ceremonies, festivities and the introduction of a few new attractions. The main novelty is situated in the south-western corner of the park, where World of Frozen was created. This is an almost exact replica of the stunning Frozen zone at Hong Kong Disneyland, and the main attraction is identical too. Frozen Ever After is a boat ride centred around the songs and characters from Frozen. The audio-animatronics are fantastic, and there are hardly any screens or projections in this attraction, which automatically places Frozen Ever After above the park’s two older dark rides. It’s far from perfect, though. Some scenes look quite two-dimensional, and the attraction tells a rather bland, childish story. I’ll give it credit for the exterior and the beautifully designed queue, but in terms of the ride itself, Frozen Ever After certainly doesn’t leave a lasting impression.

OTHER EXPERIENCES

To be honest… I would have liked to see an extra ride in Arendelle. Although I find this French World of Frozen more attractive than the Hong Kong version because of its larger water feature, the area feels a bit empty. A copy of Wandering Oaken’s Sliding Sleighs would have fitted perfectly into Disney Adventure World’s ride lineup, but even a small-sized flat ride would’ve been perfect to enhance the area’s kinetics. Interestingly, a new flat ride was indeed built at Disney Adventure World, but it ended up on the other side of the lake. Thanks to the addition of Raiponce Tangled Spin, Disneyland Paris now owns Europe’s two most beautiful teacup rides. Raiponce Tangled Spin may be a very simple attraction with a ride sequence that’s hardly worth mentioning, but thanks to the lanterns and the dreamy music, it’s well worth a look.

Despite not having a Cars Land like Disney California Adventure, Adventure World is home to two different Cars attractions. The oldest one is Cars Quatre Roues Rallye, a relatively simple flat ride that’s similar to Mater’s Junkyard Jamboree. The younger Cars Road Trip is a reincarnation of the old Studio Tram Tour. It was no secret that Studio Tram Tour had passed its expiry date. Yet it seemed impossible to remove the attraction from a park that desperately needed the ride capacity. Disney therefore decided to retain the attraction and spruce it up with a modest Cars theme. Unfortunately, the result is wildly disappointing. Whilst there are a few cute decorative elements along the route, it’s all very static and kitsch. This counts as one of the worst Disney attractions ever.

Disney Adventure World’s most thrilling ride is The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror. And honestly, it’s my favourite attraction at the European Disney resort. Everything about Tower of Terror is great. I’m talking about the grand exterior, the beautiful hotel lobby, the mysterious boiler room and the ride which transports you directly to the Twilight Zone. There’s not a single part of this attraction that I don’t like, but you may want to ask for the original English narration instead of the French version. Tower of Terror deserves nothing but praise. Although the pre-show isn’t as stunning as the one in Japan and the Orlando ride feels more unique, this is one of Europe’s very best thrills. Tons of airtime are included, by the way.

ENTERTAINMENT

At the base of Tower of Terror is World Premiere Plaza, an area that somewhat reminds me of the Walt Disney Studios Park as it was 2002. It’s a concrete square with some bare-looking studios surrounding it, so this isn’t the cosiest or best-themed place in the park. Fortunately, there are some fun things to discover behind the facades of those studios. The youngest visitors, for example, can head to the colourful Minnie’s Dream Factory. The adjacent Stitch Live is also aimed at children, but this interactive show can also be hilarious for grown-ups. Stitch Live allows visitors to chat with Disney’s most popular alien, and it often turns out to be a lot of fun. Everything depends on audience participation, but it’s usually quite humouristic.

World Premiere Plaza is undeniably the heart of entertainment at Disney Adventure World. The Animagique Theatre’s stage is used for Mickey and the Magician, a show that feels like the European version of Mickey and the Wondrous Book at Hong Kong Disneyland. Just like its Asian counterpart, this show features stunning sets, powerful live singing and a storyline that involves all the Disney magic you’d expect. Still, I am perhaps even more impressed by the show we attended at the Studio Theatre. This is the home of Together – a Pixar Musical Adventure, a show that feels innovative in several ways. There is a live orchestra, the stage is dominated by giant, crystal-clear screens and they’re even using drones. During this musical Pixar journey, we meet characters from Toy Story, Up, Finding Nemo and Monsters Inc, but it seems that most of the budget was spent on the fantastic Coco scene. The catchy theme song makes the show even more compelling, so please don’t miss Together – a Pixar Musical Adventure during your trip to Adventure World!

There’s also plenty of entertainment in the new section of the park. On Adventure Way, we spot a cheerful brass band led by Minnie Mouse, and we make our way to World of Frozen for A Celebration in Arendelle. Olaf takes centre stage as a (surprisingly humorous) host, but the other main characters from Frozen can also be seen on beautiful boats. I really enjoyed A Celebration in Arendelle, but be warned: the viewing area is quite cramped. The best spots are taken as early as 30 minutes before the show starts, so I’d advise you to arrive early. Fortunately, this isn’t a problem at Disney’s Cascade of Lights. Adventure Bay is surrounded by wide pathways on different levels, making it a breeze to secure an excellent spot for this nighttime spectacular. And there’s even more reason to be excited about Cascade of Lights, as this fireworks, fountain, projection and drone show turns out to be brilliant. The drone formations in particular are incredibly cool to see. At Walt Disney Studios, the day always ended on a bit of a low note, but Disney Adventure World finally gives us a good reason to stay until closing time.

WORTH A VISIT?

Disney Adventure World is a park of contrasts, a place of highs and lows. One moment you’re watching a brilliant theatre show. The next, you’re on the most boring Cars ride in the world. Next, you might experience the brilliant Tower of Terror, after which you ride a disappointing Avengers roller coaster. For 24 years, Walt Disney Studios was considered the weakest Disney park, and that’s not something you can change overnight. Despite a name change and a massive expansion, it’s difficult to shake off that questionable past. However, the park has some strong points. Disney Adventure World has a few shows and attractions that count as Disney’s finest work, but the atmosphere in some older parts of the park remains substandard. Disney is taking the liberty of expanding this park with a wide variety of IPs. In the short term that’s a good thing. The Avengers are popular, Pixar is doing well and World of Frozen is proving to be a massive hit. But do all these themes together form a well-rounded, coherent theme park? I’m not entirely sure about that.

Will Disney Adventure World ever become my favourite theme park? I’d be very surprised if it did. Still, Adventure Way, Adventure Bay and the Frozen area are a clear step in the right direction, and I can’t wait to discover the upcoming Lion King water ride. So in ten years’ time, this will probably be a park that exudes more maturity and magic. But until then, I’d advise you to enter with modest expectations.

Het is niet ongezien dat een Disney-themapark een naamswijziging ondergaat. Disney-MGM Studios werd Disney’s Hollywood Studios, Euro Disneyland heet tegenwoordig Disneyland Paris en Disney’s California Adventure werd getransformeerd tot – hou je vast – Disney California Adventure. Het waren allemaal subtiele veranderingen die een relatief beperkte invloed hadden op de identiteit van de parken in kwestie. Recentelijk vond er in het Franse Disney-resort echter een meer ingrijpende metamorfose plaats. Het Walt Disney Studios Park staat sinds maart 2026 namelijk bekend als Disney Adventure World. In dit geval is het niet zomaar een kleine verandering. Het is een statement, een radicale breuk met het verleden. Men wil immers dat het huidige park zo min mogelijk geassocieerd wordt met de Walt Disney Studios die hier in 2002 openden, en jaar na jaar vernietigende kritiek moesten slikken.

Dat Disney rond de millenniumwisseling geen bijster succesvolle films afleverde, is geen geheim. Toch bewoog er rond die tijd heel wat binnen het bedrijf. Disney Cruise Line had net z’n eerste twee schepen in gebruik genomen en de vier bestaande themapark-resorts ontvingen allemaal een nieuwe gate. Het kwaliteitsniveau van die parken bleek echter behoorlijk uiteenlopend. In Florida en Japan presenteerde men respectievelijk Disney’s Animal Kingdom en Tokyo DisneySea, parken die al sinds hun begindagen bij de mooiste van de planeet gerekend worden. Het contrast met de uitbreidingen in Californië en Frankrijk kon nauwelijks groter zijn. Disney California Adventure werd in z’n begindagen bijvoorbeeld gedomineerd door goedkope frontjes en simpele attracties. Het meest trieste tafereel speelde zich echter af in Parijs, waar ‘s werelds lelijkste en saaiste Disney-themapark zichzelf vlak naast een van de meest oogverblindende parken nestelde. Gelukkig leek Disney zelf ook te beseffen dat Walt Disney Studios een aanfluiting was. Er werden regelmatig nieuwe attracties toegevoegd en in 2018 verscheen er bovendien een masterplan dat het park eindelijk naar de Disney-standaarden moest brengen.

Rondom de ingang van het park is er aanvankelijk weinig verandering merkbaar. Er plakt uiteraard een nieuwe naam op de entreeboog en op de Earfell Tower, maar verder ziet deze zone er nog grotendeels hetzelfde uit als tien jaar geleden. In dit geval is dat echter prima, want deze Place des Frères Lumière straalde altijd al een zekere grandeur uit. Het is geen plek waar je doorgaans lang blijft rondhangen, maar die wuivende palmbomen en de luid weerklinkende filmmuziek leveren een uitstekende binnenkomer. Een paar stappen verderop valt er wel wat nieuws te ontdekken. World Premiere is de stijlvolle opvolger van Studio 1, een overdekte Main Street. Gevels werden opgefrist en kleurrijke neon werd toegevoegd, terwijl ook het bijbehorende fastfoodrestaurant een geslaagde upgrade onderging. Onze eerste indrukken van Disney Adventure World zijn dus meer dan prima.

ACHTBANEN

Op het moment van schrijven telt Disney Adventure World vijf themawerelden. Aan de noordzijde van het park ligt Worlds of Pixar, dat een groot deel van het totale attractieaanbod voor z’n rekening neemt. Als we op de gemiddelde wachttijd afgaan, is Crush’s Coaster sowieso de populairste ride van dit gebied. Deze spinning coaster is al twintig jaar berucht omwille van z’n lage capaciteit en de extreme rijen die daarbij horen. Vooral sinds de introductie van Premier Access werd het gevoelsmatig een attractie voor the happy few. Da’s zonde, want het is een ride die me telkens veel plezier bezorgt. Hoewel ik besef dat Crush’s Coaster uiteindelijk slechts een opgesmukte kermisachtbaan is, geniet ik van de toffe darkride-scènes en de verrassend snelle achtbaanrit. Er zou gerust wat extra thema in de hal mogen hangen, maar heel storend vind ik de duisternis niet. Al bij al is Crush’s Coaster dus een attractie die ik al jaren liefheb, al werpen de buitenaards lange wachttijden een donkere schaduw op de totaalervaring.

Goed nieuws voor thrill-fanaten: de spectaculairste achtbaan van Disney Adventure World heeft meestal een zeer lage wachttijd. Zelfs op een drukke dag kunnen we na amper 15 minuten plaatsnemen in Avengers Assemble – Flight Force, de spirituele opvolger van Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster. Bizar maar waar: de sterktes van Flight Force’s voorganger zijn omgezet naar zwaktes en vice versa. De Franse Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster had bijvoorbeeld een lelijke voorgevel en een saai vormgegeven preshow, maar die problemen werden verholpen. De blitse façade bestaat uit een modern lijnenspel en de ingang wordt gemarkeerd door een knap replica van de Quinjet. Daarnaast blijkt de indoor wachtruimte best mooi en in de voorshow treffen we een indrukwekkende animatronic van Iron Man. Helaas is het verdere verloop inferieur ten opzichte van z’n voorganger. De ritervaring van Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster was fantastisch dankzij de grandioze belichting, maar tegenwoordig bestaat de thematiek volledig uit slecht uitgevoerde schermpassages. Flight Force voelt als een budgetversie van Hyperspace Mountain in het aangrenzende Disneyland, en dat mogen de Imagineers als een grove belediging beschouwen. Begrijp me niet verkeerd… Puur als achtbaan is dit nog steeds een prima belevenis. Maar als Disney zo’n sterke hardware verspilt aan een dergelijk flauw totaalplaatje, dan is er iets grondig mis.

DARKRIDES

Flight Force is onderdeel van Avengers Campus. Deze themazone verrees op de fundamenten van de oude Backlot en vormt de thuishaven van heel wat Marvel-characters. De superhelden zijn talrijk aanwezig dankzij kleinschalige shows en meet & greets. En de populairste superheld van Avengers Campus? Dat is Spider-Man, die z’n naam ontleent aan Spider-Man W.E.B. Adventure. Dit is een interactieve darkride die opvallende gelijkenissen vertoont met Toy Story Mania. Hoewel het thema natuurlijk iets serieuzer is, speelt ook deze darkride zich voornamelijk op schermen af. Wat W.E.B. Adventure onderscheidt, is z’n interactieve spel: er komen geen laserpistolen aan te pas, maar ingebouwde sensoren tracken de bewegingen van je handen. Ondanks dit relatief unieke systeem moet ik toegeven dat W.E.B. Adventure me niet helemaal overtuigt. De gameplay is bijvoorbeeld eerder chaotisch en het is bovendien jammer dat er geen fysieke scènes of animatronics aan te pas komen. En moest Tom Holland nu echt in ‘t Frans gedubt worden tijdens de voorshow? Al bij al ervaar ik W.E.B. Adventure dus niet als een waardevolle E-Ticket attractie, maar wel als een simpel tussendoortje.

Van Tom Holland naar Tom Frankrijk. Toen men in 2014 de door en door Franse darkride Ratatouille – l’Aventure Totalement Toquée de Rémy presenteerde, ontstond er voor het eerst een immersief themagebied(je) in de toenmalige Walt Disney Studios. Het Parijse stadstafereel blijft ook vandaag een prachtige plek. Mede dankzij de wondermooie soundtrack van Michael Giacchino en het zachte geklater van de centrale fontein voel je hier de Disney-romantiek die in vele andere gedeelten van het park een beetje ontbreekt. Ondanks het oogverblindende exterieur is de eigenlijke attractie helaas eerder zo-zo. Net zoals W.E.B. Adventure vertrouwt deze trackless darkride namelijk te hard op schermen. Ik kan me dus niet van de indruk ontdoen dat er meer potentieel in deze ride zat. Ratatouille werd in hetzelfde tijdperk ontworpen als Mystic Manor en Battle for the Sunken Treasure, maar blijft mijlenver achter op die beide knallers.

Walt Disney Studios werd op 29 maart 2026 officieel hernoemd naar Disney Adventure World. Het gebeuren ging niet alleen gepaard met heel wat ceremonies en festiviteiten, maar er werden ook nieuwe attracties geïntroduceerd. Het belangrijkste exemplaar ligt in de zuidwestelijke hoek van het park, waar World of Frozen ontstond. Dit is een bijna-exacte kopie van de wondermooie Frozen-zone in Hong Kong Disneyland en ook de hoofdattractie is identiek. Frozen Ever After is een bootjesdarkride waarin de songs en de personages uit Frozen centraal staan. De audio-animatronics zijn fantastisch en er zitten nauwelijks schermen of projecties in deze attractie, waardoor Frozen Ever After automatisch boven de twee oudere darkrides van Adventure World staat. De perfectie blijft echter veraf. Sommige scènes hebben namelijk een wel erg tweedimensionaal karakter en de attractie vertelt een nogal zoutloos, simpel verhaaltje. Ik geef goeie punten voor het exterieur en de prachtig aangelegde wachtruimte, maar qua rit maakt Frozen Ever After zeker geen blijvende indruk.

ANDERE ATTRACTIES

Eerlijk is eerlijk… Ik had graag een extra ride in Arendelle gezien. Hoewel ik deze Franse World of Frozen omwille van z’n grotere waterpartij mooier vind dan de versie in Hong Kong, voelt het gebied enigszins leeg aan. Een kopie van Wandering Oaken’s Sliding Sleighs had naar mijn gevoel perfect in de line-up van Disney Adventure World gepast, maar ook een doodgewone (weliswaar fijn gethematiseerde) flatride zou het aanbod uitstekend afgerond hebben. Er kwam overigens wel een nieuwe flatride naar Disney Adventure World, al belandde die aan de overkant van het meer. Dankzij de toevoeging van Raiponce Tangled Spin mag Disneyland Paris zich tegenwoordig trouwens de eigenaar van Europa’s twee mooiste theekopjesmolens noemen. Naast Mad Hatter’s Tea Cups heeft ook Raiponce Tangled Spin namelijk veel pracht en praal te bieden. In feite is dit een heel simpele attractie met een weinig noemenswaardig ritprogramma, maar dankzij de lantaarns en de dromerige muziek is het de moeite waard om hier op z’n minst een kijkje te nemen.

Disney’s Imagineers creëerden al vele waanzinnige themagebieden. Een van de pareltjes is ongetwijfeld Cars Land in Disney California Adventure Park, maar ook in Parijs hebben we inmiddels twee Cars-attracties. Bizar genoeg liggen die niet naast elkaar. Het oudste exemplaar is Cars Quatre Roues Rallye, een relatief simpele molen. Sinds 2021 kan je tevens terecht bij Cars Road Trip, een reïncarnatie van de oude Studio Tram Tour. Het was geen geheim dat Studio Tram Tour zijn houdbaarheidsdatum al lang overschreden had. Toch leek het onmogelijk om de ride te verwijderen uit een park dat de attractiecapaciteit hard nodig had. Disney koos er bijgevolg voor om de attractie te behouden en met een bescheiden Cars-thema op te smukken. Jammer genoeg is het resultaat van de ombouw ronduit teleurstellend. Er staan weliswaar enkele schattige decorstukken langs de route, maar het is allemaal zeer statisch en kitscherig. Ondanks de indrukwekkende Catastrophe Canyon-scène is dit dus een attractie om snel te vergeten.

Cars is goed vertegenwoordigd in Disneyland Paris en ook Toy Story is een succesnummer. In Disneyland Park ontmoet je Buzz in zijn hyperpopulaire darkride, terwijl er in Walt Disney Studios zelfs een heuse themazone rondom de franchise gebouwd werd. Toy Story Playland opende in 2010 en leverde in één klap drie klassieke familieattracties op. Dat zijn rupsmolen Slinky Dog Zigzag Spin (alleen de moeite indien er helemaal geen rij staat), Toy Soldiers Parachute Drop (de lelijkste attractie die ooit in een Disney-park gebouwd is?) en RC Racer. Die laatstgenoemde is voor thrill seekers de hoofdreden om Toy Story Playland te bezoeken: deze Halfpipe van Intamin verbaast me telkens weer met z’n krachtige acceleratie. Daartegenover staan helaas een pijnlijk korte ritduur en een belabberde capaciteit. Het is een leuke ride, maar langer dan 30 minuten zou ik er niet voor willen aanschuiven.

Walt Disney Studios heeft tijdens de afgelopen vijfentwintig jaar eigenlijk nooit echt stilgestaan. De eerste grote impuls kwam er in 2007, toen het resort zijn vijftiende verjaardag vierde. Het toenmalige Walt Disney Studios kreeg in dat jaar maar liefst drie nieuwe attracties. Dat zijn trouwens niet de minsten, want twee van deze rides groeiden uit tot de smaakmakers van het park. Ik heb het over Crush’s Coaster en The Twilight Zone – Tower of Terror. Veel introductie heeft deze iconische vrijevaltoren wellicht niet nodig. Je weet ongetwijfeld dat hij geïntegreerd werd in het stoffige Hollywood Tower Hotel en dat Cast Members er soms creepy uit de hoek durven komen. De rit bestaat uit een sfeervolle voorshow en een thrill ride van de bovenste plank. Sinds de introductie van de nieuwe ritprogramma’s vind ik Tower of Terror trouwens nog sterker dan vroeger. De valsequentie lijkt langer te duren en de drops zijn veel minder voorspelbaar. Tower of Terror bevestigt dus moeiteloos dat het een van Europa’s allerbeste gethematiseerde thrills is. Het feit dat de wachttijden tijdens ons bezoek zelden boven de 30 minuten uitkomen, maakt het nóg plezanter.

ENTERTAINMENT

Rondom Tower of Terror ligt World Premiere Plaza, een gebied dat enigszins herinnert aan het Walt Disney Studios Park uit 2002. Het middelpunt van de zone is een betonnen plein waarrond enkele kille studiogebouwen opgetrokken werden. Voor de gezelligheid moet je hier dus niet zijn, maar achter de gevels vallen er wel leuke dingen te beleven. De allerjongste bezoekers kunnen bijvoorbeeld terecht bij het kleurrijke Minnie’s Dream Factory. Het aangrenzende Stitch Live heeft eveneens een kinderlijke ondertoon, al stap ik er altijd met een brede glimlach buiten. Deze interactieve voorstelling laat je praten met Disney’s populairste alien en dat pakt vaak behoorlijk leuk uit. Alles is afhankelijk van de publieksparticipatie, maar qua humor zit het hier meestal wel goed.

World Premiere Plaza is ontegensprekelijk het centrum van het entertainment in Disney Adventure World. Naast Minnie’s Dream Factory en Stitch Live bevat de zone namelijk nog twee andere theaterzalen waar grootschalige Disney-shows opgevoerd worden. Het Animagique Theater vormt het decor voor Mickey and the Magician, een door en door Disney-achtig spektakel dat qua opbouw doet terugdenken aan Mickey and the Wondrous Book in Hong Kong Disneyland. Net zoals z’n Aziatische tegenhanger bestaat deze show uit prachtige decors, sterke live zang en een eenvoudig te volgen verhaallijn. Toch ben ik misschien nog meer onder de indruk van de voorstelling die we in het Studio Theater bijwonen. Daar kunnen we namelijk terecht voor Together – a Pixar Musical Adventure, een show die op meerdere vlakken vernieuwend aanvoelt. Er is een live orkest, er wordt gebruikgemaakt van drones en het podium wordt gedomineerd door reusachtige, haarscherpe beeldschermen. We zien tijdens deze muzikale Pixar-reis personages uit Toy Story, Up, Finding Nemo en Monsters Inc, al lijkt het erop dat het grootste deel van het budget naar de fantastische Coco-scène ging. Het catchy themaliedje maakt de voorstelling trouwens nog sterker, dus mis Together – a Pixar Musical Adventure alsjeblieft niet!

Ook in het nieuwe parkgedeelte is er behoorlijk wat showvermaak te zien. Op Adventure Way spotten we een vrolijke fanfare die aangevoerd wordt door Minnie Mouse en op de waterpartij van World of Frozen speelt A Celebration in Arendelle. Er is een (verrassend humoristische) hoofdrol weggelegd voor Olaf, maar ook de andere hoofdpersonages uit Frozen varen voorbij op prachtig vormgegeven bootjes. Ik vind A Celebration in Arendelle ontzettend leuk, maar wees gewaarschuwd: de viewing area is best krap. De goeie plaatsen worden reeds 30 minuten voor de start van de show ingenomen, dus ik raad je aan om vroeg aanwezig te zijn. Bij Disney Cascade of Lights vormt dit gelukkig geen probleem. Rondom Adventure Bay werden brede paden op verschillende niveaus aangelegd, waardoor het kinderspel is om een uitstekende plek te bemachtigen voor dit avondspektakel. En er is nog meer reden om enthousiast te zijn over Cascade of Lights, want deze vuurwerk-, fontein-, projectie- en droneshow blijkt top. Vooral de drone-figuren zijn van een verrassend hoog niveau. In Walt Disney Studios eindigde de dag altijd een beetje in mineur, maar Disney Adventure World geeft ons eindelijk een goede reden om tot sluitingstijd te blijven.

EEN BEZOEK WAARD?

Disney Adventure World is een park van contrasten, een plek met ups and downs. Het ene moment aanschouw je een schitterende theatershow, even later zit je in de saaiste Cars-attractie ter wereld. Vervolgens kan je inchecken bij die briljante Tower of Terror, om daarna een teleurstellend ritje op de Avengers-achtbaan te maken. Walt Disney Studios gold 24 jaar als het zwakste Disney-park en zoiets verander je niet zomaar. Ondanks een naamswijziging en mega-uitbreiding is het moeilijk om komaf te maken met dat bedenkelijke verleden. Ik wil echter niet beweren dat er op dit moment geen fijne shows en attracties te vinden zijn. Disney Adventure World heeft enkele sterke eyecatchers in de aanbieding, maar de structuur en sfeer van sommige ‘oude’ parkgedeelten blijven ondermaats. Disney neemt de vrijheid om dit park uit te breiden met de meest uiteenlopende IP’s en op korte termijn is dat een goede zaak. De Avengers zijn populair, Pixar doet het goed en World of Frozen blijkt een regelrechte hit. Maar of al deze thema’s tezamen één coherent aanvoelend themapark vormen? Ik durf daar momenteel eigenlijk geen positief antwoord op te geven.

Gaat Disney Adventure World zichzelf ooit ontpoppen tot m’n favoriete themapark? Ik acht de kans klein. Toch zijn Adventure Way, Adventure Bay en het Frozen-gebied een duidelijke stap in de goede richting, en ik kan niet wachten om de aankomende Lion King-waterattractie te ontdekken. Over tien jaar staat hier dus waarschijnlijk een park dat meer maturiteit en magie uitstraalt. Maar tot die tijd kan ik je zeggen: stap hier maar liever met gematigde verwachtingen binnen.
